“ConKerr Cancer: A Case for Smiles” provides fun, whimsical pillowcases to brighten up the day and put a smile on the face of children in the Oncology Unit. ConKerr Cancer started when Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face. He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for other children.

Since then the pillowcase project, A Case for Smiles, has grown in amazing ways. Hundreds of thousands of pillowcases have been provided to sick children from across North America and in South Africa. School groups, sewing circles, religious groups and fabric stores have all pitched in and are making pillowcases for the kids. For more information, visit their website at http://www.conkerrcancer.org

As September is Pediatric Cancer month, we have chosen this time to bring as many smiles to as many sick children as possible at Albany Medical Center. From now through September 13th, purchase of one of our pillowcase kits (which includes all fabric and the pattern) is only $5 - which will be refunded if you bring the pillowcase back by Sept 19th so we can donate it as part of the ConKerr initiative.

You don't have to buy a kit to donate a pillowcase! Make as many as you like - it's a great stash buster.  There is a free pattern at http://quiltbug.com/free/free.htm

We hope you will join us – we guarantee it will put a smile on your face too!

Raffle Quilt for ParkinsonsA local group raising money for Parkinsons brought in a 78" x 78" log cabin raffle quilt yesterday - very rich, intense colors. Lost/Stolen Quilts

These quilts were part of a trunk show from the book World War II Quilts that author Sue Reich sent to the Asheville Rotary for their quilt show. They were not properly secured by the Rotary for the return trip and disappeared from the Keasbey, New Jersey FedEx facility on August 11, 2010.  They do have Sue's name and address on the hanging sleeve.

Update:  All but the Grandmothers Flower Garden Quilt have been found!  Thanks to the efforts of a very persuasive quilter, three of the quilts were found by a FedEx employee.

Care Collection

We will not be having a class on September 11.  Instead we will be taking up a care collection for local military personnel stationed overseas.  If you are local to Esperance NY, please consider taking up a collection at work and donating it to us on the 11th.  We will pack and ship it, don't worry about that:-))  If you need some suggestions, feel free to print and distribute this Soldiers Wish List.  By the way, expired coupons can be used at the PX overseas.  If you would like to donate just expired coupons, E-mail operationcoupons@comcast.net for more details.

The IBOL guy is at it again!

If you sew or knit, and have extra stuff that you would like to donate, check out the IBOL guy.  He is a soldier who gathers Bundles of Love from all over America and ships it to Iraq to help the families there.  As he says, Iraqi's need a chance, not charity.

What is IBOL?  Donors send a flat-rate box of sewing / quilting / knitting supplies, all bundled up to a military address in Iraq. (This is considered a US address, so special discounted mailing rates apply.) Once it’s there, someone will open the box, pull out the fully-contained bundle, and hand it off (with others) for distribution in the Salah ad Din area.

The stated intent of this operation is to put sewing and quilting and knitting supplies into the hands of two types of recipients: locals who desperately need such things, and local sewing co-ops and other small businesses who have received grants or loans (typically to purchase sewing machines, rent space, etc).  The picture to the right shows him sitting on just one of the palettes of IBOL boxes received last year.

For more information on IBOL II, visit his website http://ibol.wordpress.com/2010/08/24/ibol-ii/ .  If you would like to read about IBOL I and the effect it had on him and the donors, you can read his essay at http://www.artlaflamme.com/blog/KMZ/IBOL_Book1.pdf
